Dave Thomas, an English musician of 25, is inspiring Youtube visitors worldwide with his own special take on contemporary instrumental music. Performing on both the Piano and the Accordion (and sometimes both together), his video covers of the soundtrack to 2001's French cult-hit "Amelié" have fetched to date over 8 million views on the site, sparking a fresh surge of young enthusiasts for today's newly composed contemporary instrumental music.
Taking inspiration from indie, punk, and dance all the way through to the classical and world music genres, Dave's original music has a subgenre all of its own - storytelling. Through mixing music of furious rhythm with that of the bittersweet, the nostalgic, and other child-like melancholies - Dave's music (and even moreso, his performance) takes hold on the listener a potent, filmic effect. Great stuff, this really is a breath of fresh air to hear something so original. If you get a chance to check mine out it will help raise funds as I'm close to qualifying for the Winter Olympics (Random I know!) I recorded these takes while on the road.
