INDIGO

Description

Sexy soul meets nu jazz. Think Carleen Anderson with a hint of Randy Crawford, topped with a sprinkling of Jill Scott. Truly and wonderfully unique!

About Indigo......

07/11/2006 By Hornblower Productions

Born and raised in Manchester, Sonia (aka Indigo) Clarkes earliest musical influences came from her parents eclectic and extensive LP collection which included artists such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, ELO, Elton John, Gladys Knight, Motown and Fleetwood Mac to name a few. Her talent for music became apparent early on as she begun playing the piano and composing at age 7, moving on to recitals and singing in church. At 10 she briefly took up a second instrument, the trombone and learned to sing in Punjabi when she joined the schools Asian Choir. It was at 14 that she started training at Oldham’s Theatre workshop. The workshop is renowned for producing some of the finest young acting talent, including Coronation St stars Michael Le Vell, (Kevin Webster), Anthony Cotton (Sean Tully) and Suranne Jones (Karen McDonald). Always one to juggle several balls, alongside her academic studies, she paid her dues, doing sessions (on keys and vocals) in various live and studio bands. "I think music kept me here. The music scene in Birmingham is vibrant but so very under-rated. Ive been blessed with the opportunity to meet, hear, play and sing with some of the UK’s finest musicians and singers. Things really opened up for me here. Her sensational voice caught the attention of top international reggae artist, Basil Gabbidon (ex Steel Pulse). 2005 saw this versatile singer perform with reggae band Gabbidon at the Birminghams Reggae Rockz Festival (Artsfest) and with Motown group, Simply Blu. Indigo is currently studying jazz piano and writing and producing her debut album Full Circle in collaboration with highly acclaimed saxophonist/producer, Alvin Davis to be completed later this year. She has currently also teamed up with Maseo from Hip Hop legends De la Soul to work on a track.
