JPow? What the hell is a JPow?
JPow is a popular Filipino vocal artist, discovered in Manila, The Philippines, with a deep fascination in melismatic musical expression, as can be discerned from his vocal performances. Born on 29 May 1985, he started singing at age 12. He studied Broadcast Communication at the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines from 2002 to 2007.
JPow's musical alias comes from an inside joke with friends from a television performance class. It's a bit of stretch but it is indeed a spin-off of J.Lo. Everytime somebody asks where such an alias came from, that sombody is baffled by this answer. So don't fret. It's about right.
JPow's musical training started when he joined a choir in his sophomore year in high school. He sang Bass, and probably still does, if it is to be noted that he can expressively hit those low notes with a heavy tone. Don't be fooled though, because while JPow can hit second octave notes with ease, he can also sail through the fifth and part of the sixth octave. That's vocal range for you and me. During his 3 year membership with the choir, he learned sight-singing (singing JUST by reading a musical piece), and playing the organ. At high school graduation, he was invited to play the instrumental piano version of his very own composition.
His musical training continued when he commenced university education by joining the official choir of the University of the Philippines. While it was a very brief stint, this allowed him to perform as a backup singer in Sharon Cuneta's The Mega Event at the Araneta Coliseum, and at the Concert for National Artists at the Cultural Center of the Philippines - performing with Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez, Jaya, Bituin Escalante, Dianne dela Fuente, and many other mainstream Filipino artists.
Now he sings pop and rhythm and blues and ventures in online music distribution. Continuing to record new songs and covers in his home studio, he gathers new fans everyday with his raw talent. On 22 December 2007, he opened up shop to make his music available for download to millions of fans not only in his home country but also across the globe. Fans saw this move as a very important step for the artist to achieve global popularity status.
His musical motto is and has always been: Express and Impress. Express with Multiple Vocal Textures. Impress with Range and Articulate Melisma.
