Hopelessly self indulgent solo guitarist who is always surprised when other people say nice things about his music! Always unique & interesting and other words to describe 'difficult'! Enjoy xx

nice reviews from nice people
31/07/2006 22:01:32 By p-a-d
so the album got launched with a gentle 'umm, please buy it!' to anyone who dared to ask how things were going, but at the same time, all the review copies got sent out. it's something i loathe, because no matter how nice your friends/relatives/pets are about your music, when it gets into the outside world, that's when things get dirty!
but... i just had the first reviews back, and some nice people at Never For Nothing just gave Strange Tale, 8/10 and Album of the Month. i'd also sent my first album and another reviewer was kind enough to give that 8/10 as well.
for a brief moment, i'm happy! it's a precious moment. now i can worry about the next one...

so this is how it ends...
13/06/2006 10:48:06 By p-a-d
it's done - the audio for the album is done, dusted and apart from the odd squiggle here and there that i could easily spend the next couple of months on, i'm suprisingly happy with it! it looks like i started with the difficult stuff, because the second half of the album came together in mastering-wise, really quickly.
bizarrely, the covers have been done for quite a while.
time to twiddle my thumbs then. oh - except i think i ran out of jewel cases! better get ordering so the pre-orders get out on time!
happy trails

thank you winchester, thank you clarity, thankyou thankyou silence!
08/06/2006 13:34:23 By p-a-d
as i know they read this...
just a heartfelt but quick thank you from within to my dear friends near winchester who i got to see at the weekend. they said some really nice things about the version of the album i took down there. dr ian has always been a great supporter of independent music and i love his enthusiasm for the sheer process of music creation.
bizarrely, it was a really nice chance to spend some time a long way away from the album as well and just sit and listen to it on a really nice hi-fi for once rather than the clinical accuracy of the studio.
they just had a very cool sproglette and it's going to be the luckiest little guy in the very cool range of music he will be exposed to while he's growing up.
thanks guys, you are treasured.

The perils of faffing!
08/06/2006 13:19:36 By p-a-d
so i only had two tracks still to make final adjustments to....
the light at the end of the tunnel...
oncoming train!
so i decided i wanted to replace a drum track - not usually a problem, mute the old one, construct a new one and remix. which would be fine had i not thought the kick drum on the old track was great; my old drum machine got wiped by a passing meteorite (or something) and i didn't have an EQ clinical enough just to knock the snare out. (yes and i tried gating it!)
so - three hours later, i'm still manually cutting out all the snare beats to leave only the kicks! sounds great now, but waaaaaaaaaah - is it really that much better than the old mix. hmm.
still, so much easier in these days of 'word-processor' sequencers.
just one track to go - but that has no drums on it - so i should be safe.
things looking ok for the 24th!

final mastering woes...
26/05/2006 11:46:17 By p-a-d
why do i do it to myself?? running a recording studio is a wonderful way to earn a 'living' but when it comes to working on your own material it just becomes such a nightmare. all those decisions that you normally agree between and artist or band and yourself, you suddenly have to make for yourself, on yer own, nada input - and there's just too much choice. who am i mixing the album for? ICE addicts shaking the neighbourhood? local club who wants deep bass and 0dB maxing? dinner party (i'll put some enya on in the background shall i?)? know thy market - hmm - tricky one! ahh stop yer naggin boy and just master the darn thing. at least i'll be able to fry eggs on the firewire drives at the end of the day. toodles. xx

launch date
26/05/2006 10:27:26 By p-a-d
on the same day that NASA announced they'd backed the shuttle out of the garage and onto the launch pad again, i finally decided on an official launch date for the album. june 24th (yes this year! cheek!). it seemed appropriate. the album is called strange tale and 24/6/06 marks the 59th anniversary of the first contemporary UFO sighting by kenneth arnold that led the way for countless balloons, planets, blokes on flying deckchairs etc all being mistaken for alien beings pitching up at CentrEarth for their family hols.
and in the same way as NASA get so twitchy at the thought of the sheer embarrassment of not being able to launch the shuttle because of excuses National Rail would be sceptical of (wrong sort of air!), so i sit here behind the mixing desk realising the clock is now not only ticking, but clanking like Marley's ghost. i'm sure it'll be fine.....
light the blue touchpaper then.
