Silly love songs

21/03/2007 By Johnguitars

Ok so being in love is great but surely there is more to the craft of songwriting than simply reitterating the eternal triangle of the love song? i.e. I've found love, "Whoopee!" I've lost love, "Argh!" I'm in love but she doesn't know I exist! So apart from girls what do guys like? Trains, planes and automobiles. We are also fascinated by war. That does not mean we like it but just like a serpent it is unadvisable to take your eyes off it. Having no military experience myself, I took the position of a father sending his only son off to war. The resulting song "When your sons go off to war," is unashamedly a tear jerker. What else? Oh yes, games. Not that I am the sporty type but a battle of wits over the chess board is always fun. My song, "The Black King Falls," was inspired when I was carrying a loaded chess board from one room to another and something bumped my elbow. The only piece to tumble was the Black King and I thought, "Now, there's a title for a song!" The song "Daddy," was sadly inspired by the number of kids I teach who come from broken homes. They are all by the world's standards well off but each has lost something which is beyond price, a stable family home. "He's gonna shoot me down," comes from a newspaper story that during the annual Paris airshow a baliff tried to reposess a Russian Mig fighter because of a little financial disagreement between Moscow and some Swiss bankers.
